Woven garments

The Woven Garment series is an experimentation on how we can construct garments starting from the design and making of the fabric itself. This exploration aims to design outside traditional ways of constructing garmentsand dressing the body. It is a study that incorporates zero-waste pattern making, weaving techniques, natural fibers, and dyeing techniques, among others.

[2026]

Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology のテキスタイル専攻教授である Prachi Mehrotra(プラチ・メーロトラ)との共同研究・制作により開発された。

This project focuses on enhancing the combination of dyeing techniques, fabric manipulation, and cyanotype while creating a zero-waste garment.

The crests of the pleats are intensified by the cyanotype, resulting in a pattern that changes depending on how the fabric is shaped.

The fabric was woven at the Bunka Research Lab of Fashion Textiles in Tokyo, and the dye process was developed in collaboration with Prachi Mehrotra, Professor of textiles at the Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, India.

 Woven Garments II
[2025]

Carrying on with the woven technique that shapes the fabric by pulling threads, this piece was created with the idea of sculpting rather than draping the garment. The dress was designed to make as few cuts to the fabric as possible, fiting the upper part of the body while creating volumes  on the bottom that would otherwise require multiple cuts and darts. Constructed from only two pieces of fabric sewn together, this garment uses a total of 13 meters of material. It was dyed using the cyanotype technique to enhance the three-dimensionality of the textile.

Continuing the exploration of zero-waste garment construction, this project integrates clothing design with textile production by designing the garment directly from the weaving process. Rather than treating textile and fashion design as separate stages, the woven pattern was developed to enable the garment’s construction without generating any fabric waste.

Twelve meters of fabric, each 40 cm in width, were used to create this jumpsuit. The weave was specifically designed to allow weft threads to be pulled in certain areas, creating gathers that shaped the garment’s form.
