What is the Rebel Tartan Project?
Rebel Tartan Project とは？
The Rebel Tartan Project is a global collaboration shaping the future of sustainable fashion.
It was originally developed by Giles Jackson, founder of the Liberation Kilt Company, in collaboration with Juliana Sissons at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) in the UK. Since 2021, the project has had over 300 students from over five countries (including Japan, UK and India) exploring sustainability through fashion and textile design. Bunka hosted a joint global student exhibition of the Rebel Tartan Project in October 2024 on campus.
The 2026 phase of Rebel Tartan will focus on cultural balance and sustainability practices from Japan and the UK. Through a series of workshops and lectures led by sustainability experts, students will develop design projects while deepening their understanding of how different cultures approach sustainability, climate action, and social issues in fashion.
The project aims to foster an environment that encourages critical discussion around design and sustainability, co-creation, peer feedback, and traditional crafts. Students’ will gain a broader perspective on global approaches to sustainability and to present their work to an international audience of their peers and experts.
Rebel Tartan Project は、サステナブルなファッションの未来を考える国際的な協働プロジェクトです。本プロジェクトは、Liberation Kilt Company 創設者のジャイルズ・ジャクソンと、英国ノッティンガム・トレント大学（NTU）のジュリアナ・シソンズの協働により立ち上げられました。
2021年以降、日本・イギリス・インドを含む5か国以上から300名を超える学生が参加し、ファッションおよびテキスタイルデザインを通してサステナビリティ探究してきました。文化学園では、2024年10月に本プロジェクトのグローバル学生合同展示をキャンパス内で開催しました。
2026年の Rebel Tartan Project では、日本とイギリスの文化やサステナブルな取り組みに焦点を当てます。サステナビリティの専門家によるワークショップやレクチャーを通して、学生はデザインプロジェクトを進めながら、ファッション業界における気候問題や社会課題への向き合い方を、国や文化の違いから学んでいきます。
本プロジェクトは、デザインとサステナビリティについて考え、対話し、互いにフィードバックを行う環境を大切にしています。共同制作や伝統的なクラフトへの理解を深めながら、世界の多様なサステナブルな考え方に触れ、自身の作品を国内外の学生や専門家に向けて発信します。

Project Overview
プロジェクト概要
This project consists of a series of workshops, lectures, one-on-one tutorials and joint sessions with students from Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Throughout the project, you will deepen your understanding of sustainability, develop your critical thinking skills, and, most importantly, explore ways to design more sustainably.
You will develop a design concept and create one final outfit. Completed works will be shown in an exhibition on Bunka’s campus and on the Rebel Tartan Project website. All finished pieces will also be entered into the project’s international contest, where industry professionals will review the work and prizes will be awarded to outstanding outcomes.
本プロジェクトでは、ワークショップ、レクチャー、個別チュートリアル、そしてノッティンガム・トレント大学（NTU）の学生との合同オンラインセッションを行います。プロジェクトを通してサステナビリティへの理解を深め、考える力を養いながら、よりサステナブルなデザインのあり方を探っていきます。
デザインコンセプトを立て、最終的に1点の作品を制作します。完成作品は文化学園キャンパス内での展示および、Rebel Tartan Project の公式ウェブサイトで公開されます。また、すべての完成作品は国際コンテストにエントリーされ、業界関係者による審査のもと、優秀作品には賞が授与されます。

All participants will receive a certificate of participation and work uploaded to the Rebel Tartan Project. All completed work will be entered in to the Rebel Tartan Project international competition with the three following categories:

Fashion Design

Product Design
The project will run in parallel across multiple institutions in 2026: Nottingham Trent University (UK), Massey University (New Zealand), Donghua University (China), Pearl Academy (India), and the University of Dundee (Scotland, UK).
Winners in each category will:

Gain global exposure through their work being shown on Arts Thread website, and ID Online Magazine (to be confirmed).

Receive an online portfolio review with a global industry specialist, offering valuable guidance on portfolio development for the fashion and design industries (see list below).
Category winners will be notified by email on July 9th, 2026.

The application deadline is February 16 (Monday) at 16:30.
Please complete the application form by logging in to your Bunka account via the link below by the deadline. As part of your application, please upload examples of past project(s) (sketches, illustrations, photos, etc.). (Max. 10 MB)
Applications will be reviewed based on your interest in this project and your English proficiency. Applicants will be contacted after the application review process is completed.
Target Students
Bunka Gakuen students only
This project is designed for students who are curious about sustainability and want to learn through creative practice and discussion.
Classes will be conducted in English; therefore, preference will be given to students with a medium and above level of English
Self-motivated students with strong planning, organizational, and presentation skills, as well as creativity in garment-making.
Participants must be able to balance this project alongside their regular coursework, including classes, assignments, and examinations

対象学生
文化学園の学生のみ
サステナビリティに関心があり、制作やディスカッションを通して学びたい学生に向けた、専門的な知識がなくても、探究する気持ちがあれば参加できるプロジェクトです。
授業は英語で行われるため、基本的な英語力を有する学生を優先します
自主的に取り組める姿勢があり、計画力・整理力・プレゼンテーション力を備え、服づくりにおける創造性を持つ学生
通常の授業（課題・試験等）と並行して、本プロジェクトに取り組むことができる学生
